In this series of blogs, we aim to highlight some of the amazing Essex-based clients that we work with. We love working with inspiring people who love what they do, and we love helping them spend more time on their passions by supporting their websites.
This second piece focuses on Charlie from Fryerning Fisheries XL Carp.
We spoke with Charlie to find out more about his business, and about his experiences working with us.
Tell us a bit about you and your business
Fryerning Fisheries is a membership-based big carp syndicate. It is a real multi-generational family business situated on the family’s farm, which spans over 250 acres. Charlie’s dad and Uncle got the idea when they wanted somewhere local where they could regularly fish but couldn’t find anywhere they were happy with. They decided to set aside around 25 acres of the family’s farmland and create a freshwater lake from scratch. This was in the early 80’s and, after a consultation period, work began in the 90’s. The progress from then to now is astounding. What was once rolling farmland has now been transformed into a picturesque fishing lake, isolated from the busy world around it and perfect for a quiet getaway.
Charlie has taken over the general running of the fisheries and he is constantly maintaining the beautiful area, while keeping an eye out for any improvements he can make to keep it one of the top syndicate fisheries in the area. They have a thriving breeding program that allows them to offer quality fishing opportunities for members.
Members benefits include a totally enclosed, secure compound, 24-hours, 7-days-a-week access and security, up to 5 days stay at any one time, showers, etc.
What was your biggest website challenge before you started working with us?
Before working with DTL Charlie had worked with a website developer who just didn’t get in touch and wouldn’t answer queries. They never received reports so didn’t know what was happening on their site, who was visiting to what visitors were looking at. It was a big frustration and Charlie and the team were getting sick of waiting so long to do anything, so they went looking elsewhere. After a recommendation from a friend they got in touch with DTL and the rest is history.
What results have you got after we started working together?
Charlie is especially happy with how the SEO (search engine optimisation) is working on the website. XL Carp are high in organic search rankings and that has a lot to do with the SEO DTL has done on the back end of the site. Charlie likes being able to contact the team to make any changes to the website that are needed. You can find out our thoughts on SEO here.
What do you like most about working with us?
After being burned by their previous provider, communication is a big issue with Charlie. He knows that he will be able to speak or email his account manager and trusts that they will get back to him with solutions quickly. SEO is also a big deal to Charlie. Without this his website would not be as visible to the general public and for a business, visibility is vital. Charlie likes the regular reporting he gets from DTL. It’s good for him to know how visitors are acting on his site and it gives him ideas on how to keep his site fresh and up-to-date.
Are you happy to recommend us and why?
“Yes definitely” says Charlie. He is happy that DTL were recommended to him and is happy to pass on that recommendation to others.
Tell us a cool story or a great business tip.
Charlie has found that the video blogs are big news on his site. The people who come and fish at his lakes love to see themselves, and their catches, highlighted in their news section.
Another thing that is really cool about XL Carp are the unusual statues they have. Artist and Sculptor Alistair Smith was commissioned by Charlie’s dad to create a colossal statue based on the Easter Island statues. It stands upon the dam wall double, overlooking the Main Lake. It’s certainly a sight to behold, and a little surprising when you first lay eyes on it. But it looks amazing, sitting there keeping an eye on the lakes and visitors. Well worth a visit just for that alone!
