Importance of Website Back-Ups

A website backup is one of the best insurance plans any business can choose to invest in to prevent against virtual disaster. We all know about backing up important files and documents on our personal or work computers – and your website is no different. You should save a copy of your website files to an external source so that they can be recovered in case of data loss. There are so many things, both accidental and intentional, that can fully take down or destroy a website. If you don’t want to succumb to a website disaster then it is absolutely imperative that you properly backup your website files to keep your site safe and secure.

Security and Firewalls

Whilst you can’t fully mitigate against future website hacks/breaches you can take steps to keep one step ahead of hackers/bots. One of these steps is to ensure you have a WordPress firewall plugin (also known as web application firewall or WAF). This acts as a shield between your website and all incoming traffic. These firewalls monitor your website traffic and block many common security threats before they reach your WordPress site. If you opt for either the Light or Medium Hosting & Protection packages we would recommend you install the WordPress Plugin WordFence. As part of the Full Hosting & Protection package we would install/configure WordFence for you.

Accesses you get

We give you full access to your website, this includes WordPress Admin access. We also grant access to SSH, FTP, cPanel (the backend administration tool for you websites server instance), and MyPhpAdmin (allows you to get to the underlying database/data). Typically these are advanced features that would be used by a website developer.

Technical terms explained

Here are some of the technical terms we’ve used on this page, and we’ll try and explain them in plain English.

  • Malware Software – which is specifically designed to disrupt, damage, or gain authorized access to a computer system.
  • Bandwidth -In its most basic definition it describes the level of traffic, and amount of data that can transfer between your site, users, and the internet.
  • FTP – File Transfer Protocol, is a way of downloading or uploading files to your website / server. This is an advanced feature used by website developers
  • SSH – Secure Shell is a way of accessing your site on the command line, which allows files to be edited, updated, deleted, etc. This is an advanced feature used by website developers.
  • Web space (also known as disk space/storage) – The amount of space on a web server that is allocated to website owners by the web hosting companies. It is made up of the total quantity of all text files, images, scripts, databases, emails and other files related to your website.
  • SSL Certificate – SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) is the standard security technology for establishing an encrypted link between a web server and a browser (e.g. Google). This is the https: you see in the URL of websites you visit. This link ensures that all data passed between the web server and browser remain private.
